Comparison of the top 5 Japanese travel agents’ results in May 2018

Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) announced that the sales of the 50 major Japanese travel agents amounted to 480.4 billion JPY in May 2018, 1.9% more than FY2016. The monthly total consisted of 165.8 billion JPY for the outbound travel business (+6.2%), 22.3 billion JPY for the inbound travel business (+7.8%) and 292.4 billion JPY for the domestic travel business (-0.9%).

The graphs below show the outbound travel business results of the top five travel agents (12 JTB group companies, six H.I.S. group companies, three Hankyu Travel group companies, 13 KNT-CT group companies, NTA). Among them, Hankyu resulted in a 30% increase in sales, and H.I.S. and NTA a 10% increase in sales.

The graphs below show the inbound travel business results of the top five travel agents (12 JTB group companies, six H.I.S. group companies, NTA, 13 KNT-CT group companies, Rakuten) for the past year. H.I.S. remarkably increased sales by 70% year on year, jumping to 2nd from 3rd in April 2018.

The graphs below show the domestic travel business results of the top five travel agents (12 JTB group companies, Rakuten, 13 KNT-CT group companies, NTA, Hankyu) for the past year. Only Rakuten and Hankyu resulted in year-on-year growth of sales.

The sales of package tour brand products totaled 109.7 billion JPY (-5.4%) with 2,767,362 customers (-8.3%) in May 2018. The breakdown was 32 billion JPY (-1.6%) with 141,690 customers (-5.5%) for the outbound travel business, 692.7 million JPY (-3.9%) with 50,800 customers (+1.5%) for the inbound travel business and 77 billion JPY (+6.9%) with 2,574,872 customers (-8.6%) for the domestic travel business.

According to the market trends based on hearings from travel companies, sales of products for Asia, especially for Korea, increased in the outbound travel market. For the inbound travel business, FIT increased. In the domestic travel market, sales reduced in all destinations in the Golden Week period due to one fewer national holiday than a year ago.
