Comparison of the top 5 Japanese travel agents’ results in October 2017

Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) announced that the sales of the 50 major Japanese travel agents amounted to 528.9 billion JPY in October 2017 (+1.9%), which consisted of 179.8 billion JPY for the outbound travel business (+8.4%), 22.9 billion JPY for the inbound travel business (+11.8%) and 316.2 billion JPY for the domestic travel business (-2.0%).

The graphs below show the outbound travel business results of the top five travel agents (25 JTB group companies, five H.I.S. group companies, three Hankyu Travel group companies, eight KNT-CT group companies, NTA). Double-digit growths on a year-on-year basis were marked by KNT-CT (+18.8%) and Hankyu (+14.6%) among the top five.

The graphs below show the inbound travel business results of the top five travel agents (25 JTB group companies, five H.I.S. group companies, NTA, eight KNT-CT group companies, Rakuten) for the past year. H.I.S. and Rakuten resulted in year-on-year growths of about 40%, and JTB also did better business with growth of 14.3%, increasing its monthly sales to 10 billion JPY or more for the first time in the past five months.

The graphs below show the domestic travel business results of the top five travel agents (25 JTB group companies, Rakuten, eight KNT-CT group companies, NTA, ANA Sales) for the past year. Only Rakuten succeeded in achieving monthly growths through the past 12 months.

The sales of package tour brand products totaled 125.8 billion JPY (-0.6%) with 3,030,211 customers (-4.2%) in October 2017. The breakdown was 38.5 billion JPY  (+11.0%) with 182,262 customers (+7.3%) for the outbound travel business, 625 million JPY (-6.5%) with 44,022 customers (+9.9%) for the inbound travel business and 86.7 billion JPY (-5.0%) with 2,803,927 customers (-5.1%) for the domestic travel business. 

According to the travel companies, the outbound travel market particularly benefited from high demands for Hawaii, Europe and Taiwan. The inbound travel market was particularly vitalized by large-sized MICE as well as travelers from China and South Korea. The domestic travel market was damaged by typhoons in two weekends in a raw.
