Japan Tourism Agency reported that travel transactions of 50 major travel agents totaled 482 billion JPY (-3.1%) in July 2016, resulting in year-on-year reductions for three months in a row. The monthly total consisted of 173.3 billion JPY for outbound travel (-6.0%), 14.9 billion JPY for inbound travel (-2.9%) and 293.9 billion JPY for travel in Japan (-1.3%). The monthly reduction of transactions for inbound travel happened for the first time since February 2012.
For outbound travel, all of top five travel agents (15 JTB Group companies, five H.I.S. Group companies, three Hankyu Travel Group companies, eight KNT-CT Group companies and NTA) resulted in year-on-year reductions.
For inbound travel by international visitors, out of top five travel agents (15 JTB Group companies, five H.I.S. Group companies, eight KNT-CT Group companies, Rakuten and NTA), JTB Group and H.I.S. each suffered -13.8% and -17.8%, while Rakuten was ranked 5th with +42.1%.
For travel in Japan, Rakuten succeeded in increasing transactions by 13% year-on-year among the top five travel agents (15 JTB Group companies, Rakuten, eight KNT-CT Group companies, NTA and ANA Sales).
Transactions of package tour brand products totaled 149 billion JPY in July 2016 (-4.0%) with 3,378,473 customers in total (-5.0%). The total comprised 53.3 billion JPY (-5.9%) with 253,477 customers (+5.4%) for outbound travel, 593 million JPY (-13.1%) with 43,104 customers (+11.3%) for inbound travel and 95 billion JPY (-2.9%) with 3,081,892 customers (-6.0%) for travel in Japan
