JTB conducted a “Survey on Art Travels (travels to enjoy art museums and art festivals)” and released rankings for “art museums and art festivals to be recommended for foreign visitors” and “art museums to be recommended/to want to visit number of times” and “art festival/art event would like to be visited.”
Adachi Museum of Art in Shimane prefecture topped the list of “art museums and art festivals to be recommended for foreign visitors.” The reason for the recommendation was “Japanese tea can be enjoyed while observing Japanese garden, therefore Japan can be thoroughly experienced.” Among the top 10 of the list, 4 art museums in Tokyo- including the Ueno Royal Museum and the National Art Center, were listed. Also, museums in Chugoku and Shikoku areas achieved high evaluations: Naoshima/Art Setouchi (Kagawa prefecture) ranked the 2nd and Ohara Museum of Art (Okayama prefecture) ranked the 4th.
The survey was conducted from September 5 to 7, 2014 on internet. Target for the ranking were 1,030 residents of Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya areas who had visited at least 1 art museum or art event and gone to overnight domestic travel within a year.
