Comparison of the top 5 Japanese travel agents’ results in July 2018

Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) announced that the sales of the 49 major Japanese travel agents amounted to 441 billion JPY in July 2018, 0.2% more than a year earlier. The monthly total consisted of 181.9 billion JPY for the outbound travel business (+6.3%), 17.9 billion JPY for the inbound travel business (+15.3%) and 241.2 billion JPY for the domestic travel business (-4.8%).

Since June 2018, Rakuten has not disclosed the business result of Rakuten Travel. 

The graphs below show the outbound travel business results of the top five travel agents (12 JTB group companies, six H.I.S. group companies, three Hankyu Travel group companies, 13 KNT-CT group companies, NTA). Among them, growth of 10% or higher was found in H.I.S. (+18.6%) and Hankyu (+12.2%).

The graphs below show the inbound travel business results of the top five travel agents (12 JTB group companies, six H.I.S. group companies, NTA, 13 KNT-CT group companies, Tobu Top Tours) for the past year. H.I.S. remarkably increased sales by 50% year on year.

The graphs below show the domestic travel business results of the top five travel agents (12 JTB group companies, 13 KNT-CT group companies, NTA, ANA Sales and JAL PAK) for the past year. Only JAL PAK resulted in year-on-year growth of sales, being ranked 5th.

The sales of package tour brand products totaled 188.8 billion JPY (-7.0%) with 2,973,652 customers (-11.0%) in July 2018. The breakdown was 35.8 billion JPY (-3.5%) with 147,991 customers (+0.8%) for the outbound travel business, 560 million JPY (-0.5%) with 46,384 customers (+0.8%) for the inbound travel business and 152.4 billion JPY (-7.8%) with 2,779,277 customers (-11.1%) for the domestic travel business.

According to the market trends based on hearings from travel companies, sales for Korea especially increased in the outbound travel market. For the inbound travel business, FIT increased. In the domestic travel market, cancellations of package produces for Chugoku and Shikoku were seen a lot because of the heavy rain disaster in western Japan in July 2018.
