Domestic travel consumption in Japan was down 20% to 3,300 billion JPY in the first quarter of 2020, hit by COVID-19

Japan Tourism Agency announced that domestic travel consumption by Japanese travelers was down 20.5% year on year to 3,347 billion JPY in the first quarter of 2020. The quarterly total  comprised 2,620 billion JPY for overnight trips (-19.3%) and 727.2 billion JPY for single-day trips (-24.5%), considerably affected by voluntary travel ban due to COVID-19

The total number of Japanese domestic travelers was also down 22.3% to 93.8 million, which were broken down into 52.8 million overnight travelers (-17.5%) and 41 million single-day travelers (-27.7%). 

Travel expenditure was up 2.3% to 45,683 JPY a traveler a trip: 49,600 JPY for overnight trip (-2.2%) and 17,745 JPY for single-day trip (+4.5%).
