HIS revealed that overseas travel bookings in this summer vacation period (July 20 to August 31) was 97.5% of the last year, but just 52.3% of the 2019 level, which was almost the same as 53.4% in the last summer over 2019.
The most-booked destination was Seoul, followed by Taipei, Honolulu. Bangkok and Singapore. Paris fell to 15th from 8th last year because of higher accommodation cost during the Olympic and Paralympic period.
As far as long-haul destinations are concerned, London as 11th, Los Angeles as 14th, Rome as 16th, Milan as 18th and Barcelona as 19th were ranked.
The most-growing destination was Cairo with 305.6% more bookings than a year ago. HIS said that about 90% have been booked for package tours including two-countries-tours to Turkey or Greece.
The 3rd was Ulan Bator of Mongolia, which has been attracted as a popular TV drama location, and HIS will offer tours using charter flights from Shizuoka, Fukuoka, Hiroshima and Nagoya.
The average overseas travel cost were up 7.9% to 192,000 yen a person. Overseas travels have been booked 42.2% by families with kids and 18.5% by couples or married couples, and 18.3% by 20s, 16.5% by 40s and 16% by 50s.
Domestic travel bookers were 86.5% of the last summer. HIS analyzed that rapid demand recovery after the pandemic has gradually calmed down. The most-booked destination was Okinawa, followed by Hokkaido, Nagasaki, Fukuoka and Kagoshima. The average domestic travel cost were up 4.7% to 89,000 yen a person.
