International guest nights increased by 50% in three urban areas and 20% in local regions in August 2024

Japan Tourism Agency reported that the total number of guest nights in August 2024 was up 1% year on year to 64.9 million, which were also up 2.8% compared to the same month of 2019. Guest nights of Japanese travelers was down 3.7% year on year to 51.7 million (down 3.7% over August 2019), while guest nights of international travelers were up 24.9% to 13.2 million (up 39.5% over August 2019).

International visitors’ guest nights accounted for 20.4% of the total.

By prefecture, the highest growth compared to 2019 was found in Tokyo with 31.8% up to 9.32 million. In comparison with a year ago, Gifu increased guest nights by 32.2% to 352,450, and Tottori by 27.4% to 352,450. 

International guest nights increased by 50% to 9.13 million in three major urban areas and by 20.7% to 4.1 million in local regions compared to August 2019. The ratio of three major urban areas rose from 64.2% in August 2019 to 69%, while the ratio of local regions reduced from 35.8% to 31%.

In August 2024, the largest source market was China with 1.8 million guest nights, followed by Taiwan with 1.6 million guest nights, South Korea with 1.3 million, U.S. with 876,000 and Hong Kong with 681,000.
