International visitors to Japan are expected to exceed the pre-pandemic level this year with 2.87 million visitors in September

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international visitors to Japan in September 2024 reached 2,872,200, 26.4% more than the same month in 2019. The numbers for the first nine months totaled 26.9 million visitors, 10.1% more than the same period in 2019, already exceeding the final result of 24 million visitors in 2023. 

The final result in 2024 is expected to exceed 31.9 million visitors in 2019.

The largest source market was South Korea with 656,700 visitors (up 126.3% over 2019), followed by China with 652,300 (down 20.4%), Taiwan with 470,600 visitors (up 25.1%), U.S. with 191,900 visitors (up 50.9%), Hong Kong with 170,200 visitors (up 9.2%).

Visitors from 18 out of 23 core source markets were record-high for September.

According to OAG, international flights arriving in six major airports in Japan (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) in September 2024 decreased by 4.3% to 20,458 and available seats by 3.6% to 4,765,651 compared to September 2019. 

Haneda handled 32.4% more flights (4,635) and 27.0% more available seats (1,149,687) than September 2019. Fukuoka also increased flights by 19.0% to 1,895 and available seats by 24.4% to 401,835.

Kansai International Airport recovered to a 7.4% decrease in flights and a 5.4% decrease in available seats.
