International visitors to Japan resulted in record-high 37 million in 2024, 5 million more visitors than 2019

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international visitors to Japan in 2024 reached record-high 36.9 million, 15.6% more visitors than the previous record of 31.9 million in 2019. The total amount of spending by international visitors was up 69.2% to record-breaking 8.1 trillion yen compared to 2019. 

Visitors from 20 out of 23 core markets broke the previous records 

International visitors in December 2024 were up 27.6% year on year to 3.5 million, marking the first over 3.4 million ever in a month. 

The largest source market in December 2024 was South Korea with 867,400 visitors (up 249.8% over 2019), followed by China with 604,200 (down 14.9%), Taiwan with 491,200 visitors (up 41.0%), Hong Kong with 285,600 visitors (up 14.4%) and U.S. with 238,500 visitors (up 65.1%). 

JNTO said that the demand was boosted especially by school holidays or Christmas holidays in December. 

According to OAG, international flights arriving in six major airports in Japan (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) in December 2024 were 22,067, 0.6% fewer flights than December 2019, and available seats decreased by 0.4% to 5,151,075 compared to December 2019. 

Haneda and Fukuoka increased flights by 25 to 30% and available seats by 15 to 25% compared to 2019.  32% Kansai recovered a 4.6% decrease in flights and a 1.8% decrease in available seats.

Through 2024, Haneda increased flights by 29.9% to 55,144, and Fukuoka by 14% to 22,564.
