Japan Tourism Agency reported that the total number of Japanese guest nights in December 2021 was up 4% to 39.5 million compared to December 2019 or up 33.8% year on year, considerably improving from a 11.3% reduction in November 2021.
The total, including international guest nights, was up 32.4% year on year to 39.8 million, which were down 15.6% compared to two years ago.

The occupation rate was 46.9%, 11.8 lower points than December 2019. All of the accommodation types saw lower occupancy rates than two years ago: 32.5%for ryokan (2.5 lower points), 42% for resort hotel (10.6 lower points), 57.2% for budget hotel (14.4 lower points) and 54.2% for city hotel (21.8 lower points).

By prefecture, growths in guest nights in comparison with two years ago were seen in Yamaguchi with 6% up and Tochigi with 0.5% up. The largest reduction compared to two years ago was seen in Okinawa with 50.1% down, followed by Osaka with 46.2% down and Tokyo with 41.3% down. The highest occupancy rate was discovered in Shimane with 66.6%, while the lowest in Nagano with 31.7%.
