Japanese outbound travelers exceeded 1 million for two months in a row, but still reduced by 40% over 2019

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) reported that the number of Japanese overseas travelers were 1,004,700 in September 2023, marking more than 1 million  for two months in a row. Compared to September 2019, however, the result was down 42.6%.

According to OAG, international flights departing from six major airports in Japan (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) were down 23.3% to 16,392 compared to September 2019, and available seats down 22.0% to 3.9 million. Among six major airports,  Haneda and Fukuoka exceeded both flights and available seats in September 2019.
