Japanese outbound travelers in January 2024 increased by 90% year on year, but still decreased by 40% over 2019

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) reported that the number of Japanese outbound travelers was down 42.3% to 838,600 in January 2024 compared to the same month 2019, though the result was 89.3% more than the same month 2023. 

According to OAG, international flights departing from six major airports in Japan (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) were still down 8.7% to 19,349, and available seats down 6.7% to 4.53 million compared to January 2019.

Haneda increased flights by 26% to 4,474 and available seats by 19.4% to  1,082,312, and Fukuoka also flights by 8.9% to 1,839 and available seats by 10.3% to 388,698. Narita and Kansai recovered to around 85% of 2019 in both flights and available seats.
