Japanese passport holder percentage is just 17% in 2024, reduced by 15% compared to 2019

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan announced that the number of general passport issues was up 8.8% year on year to 3.7 million in 2024, but down 15.2% compared to 2019 (4.4 million issues). The total number of valid passports was 20.8 million as of the end of 2024, and the passport holder percentage was just 16.8% of the entire population of 123 million.

The total consisted of 44.8% for males and 55.2% for females, and passport holders of 30 years old or younger accounted for 48%. 

Ministry of Foreign Affairs has begun receiving online passport application since March 2023. The ratio of online passport applications was about 9% of the total, and the ratio of those for renewal was 31%.
