Leisure White Paper 2024 shows that the the highest performance rate among leisure activities in Japan was ‘domestic travel’

Japan Productivity Center released ‘Leisure White Paper 2024 (preliminary),’ which clarifies leisure activity trends in Japan in 2023. The highest performance rate was seen in ‘domestic travel,’ following the last year, and the highest potential demand seen in ‘overseas travel.’

The performance rate of ‘domestic travel’ rose from 42.8% last year to 48.7%, which was still lower than 54.3% in 2019 before the pandemic. The 2nd was ‘dining out’ with 39.2%, rising from the fourth with 35.8% last year. In the tourism sectors, ‘driving’ was 6th with 32.7%, and the performance rate of ‘overseas travel’ was just 5.3%.

By sex, ‘domestic travel’ was top in both males (46.1%) and females (51.3%). The average performances of ‘domestic travel’ in a year was 4.1 times a person, and the average expenses were 133,000 yen a person. The average performances of ‘overseas travel’ in a year was 2.9 times a person with the average expenses of 358,000 yen a person.

The top of the desire rate to continue or perform in the future was also ‘domestic travel’ with 65.1%, 28 or higher points than the 2nd ‘reading a book.’ Among tourism activities, 3rd was ‘going to zoo、botanical garden, aquarium or museum’ (36.7%), 7th ‘driving’ (32.5%) and 8th ‘going to amusement parks or theme-parks’ (32.4%).  

The highest potential demand, calculated from the difference between the performance rate and the desire rate, was ‘overseas travel’ with 21.5%, followed by ‘domestic travel’ (16.4%). Interestingly, cruise with 10.8% rose from 9th last year to 6th.
