
The latest survey on businesses for foreign visitors by small-scale companies of Japan, conducted by Japan Finance Corporation, finds that a share of answers of “We do businesses to increase sales from foreign visitors” was just 2.9% of the total. A share of “having no business at this moment but plans in the future” was 4.9%, and more than 90% of small-scale companies answered “having no business at this moment and no plan even in the future.”
Major reasons for the negative reactions were “no need to do business (51.5%),” “not foreseeing a positive result because of location or service content (40.8%)” and “having an intention but no ability (7.6%).”
The most answers of “having an intention but no ability” were found in the transportation industry (13.5%), followed by restaurants and the lodging industry (13.2%).
Major reasons for “having an intention but no ability” were “short of knowledge or know-how (57.3%)”and “short of human resources (41.7%)” for restaurants and the lodging industry, and even for the transportation industry, the two reasons were top (46.2% for each).

The survey was conducted to 10,000 Japan Finance Corporation partners in early June 2015, and valid answers were from 5,968 small-scale companies.
