Narita International Airport joined the IATA’s leading Verifiable Credentials (VCs) demonstration test, in which demonstrator passengers of Cathay Pacific Airlines used a smartphone wallet app to purchase tickets and complete digital travel procedures for round-trip travel between Hong Kong International Airport (outbound) and Narita (return).
Two demonstrators flew from Hong Kong to Narita on October 21 and from Narita to Jong Kong on the next day.
Interoperability between two different biometric identifications was demonstrated. Passengers registered Hong Kong Airport's 'Flight Token' (self-service using biometric authentication) and Narita Airport's 'Face Express' (boarding procedures using facial recognition) in their wallets in advance, and it was confirmed that passengers could pass through security entrance gates and boarding gates using facial recognition at the time of departure at both Hong Kong and Narita airports.
When tokens stored in the smartphone wallet was sent to the airports, it was confirmed that VCs authorization could prevent tampering data to a high degree.
