Sales of 46 major travel companies in Japan were down 78% to less than 1 trillion JPY in FY2020, deadly hit by a 98% reduction in overseas travel

Japan Tourism Agency announced that sales of 46 major travel companies reduced by 78.4% year on year to 999.7 billion JPY in total in FY2020 ended March 31 2021, obviously hit by the pandemic through the year .  

Sales of domestic travel were down by 63.1% to 948.1 billion JPY with partial benefits from Go To Travel Campaign last year. Sales of overseas travel and inbound travel continued reducing by 97.7% to 42.5 billion JPY and by 96% to 9.1 million JPY respectively.

Sales of package tour products also largely dropped: 304 billion JPY (-65.8%) with 9.5 million customers (-66.8%) for domestic travel , 73.3 million JPY with 99 customers for overseas travel and 4 million JPY with 292 customers for inbound travel.

Among 46 travel companies, the top was JTB Group with sales of 421.5 billion JPY (-73.3%), followed by KNT-CT Holdings with 99.8 billion JPY (-78.2%), NTA with 97.8 billion JPY (-77%), Hankyu with 58.4 billion JPY (-82.6%) and Jalpak with 56.4 billion JPY (-68.5%). Relying heavily on the overseas travel business, HIS suffered a 94.2% decrease in annual sales to 27 billion JPY.
