The most-used payment means in Japan is cash with a share of 90%, followed by credit card

The Rakuten Research survey on cashless trend in Japan finds that the most-used payment means in daily shopping except online shopping is cash with a share of 90% (multiple answers), followed by credit card with 82.5% and electronic money card with 43.4%.

By age, one-fourth of 20’s and 30’s males use payment app on smart phone.

The top motivation for using other payment means than cash is ‘to get points (86.2%),’ followed by ‘smoother payment (70.1%)’ and ‘more places available for cashless payments (32.6%).’

The top motivation for using cash is ‘possibly spending too much with cashless payment (41.8%),’ followed by ‘few places available for cashless payments (13.6%)’ and ‘anxiety about security in cashless payment (13.4%).’ 

The average credit cards a person are 2.9, and the ratio of people who hold only one credit card is 20%.
