Travel spending in Japan by Japanese travelers was up 7.6% in the Q2 of 2024 compared to 2019

Japan Tourism Agency announced that the total amount of Japanese travel spending was up 14.9% year on year to 6.5 trillion yen in the 2nd quarter of 2024 (April to June 2024), which were also up 7.6% more spending than the same period of 2019. The total consisted of 5.1 trillion yen for overnight trips (up 12.3% over 2019) and 1.3 million yen for day trips (down 7.2% over 2019).

The total number of Japanese travelers in Japan was up 9.4% year on year to 145 million, which were 11.4% fewer travelers than 2019. Overnight travelers were up 3.8% to 75 million (down 10.4% over 2019), and day travelers were up 16.1% to 70 million (down 12.5% over 2019).

Travel spending a travel per traveler was up 5.0% year on year to 44,374 yen, which were also 21.5% more than even 2019. It was up 11.3% to 66,202 yen for overnight trip (up 25.3% over 2019) and down 3.0% to 19,003 yen for day trip (down 3.0% over 2019).
