Japan Tourism Agency announced that sales of 43 major travel companies in August 2024 were up 1.8% year on year to 323.4 billion JPY, but was still down 32.5% compared to the same month of 2019.
Sales in domestic travel were down 7.1% year on year or down 32.4% over 2019 to 178 billion JPY. Sales in overseas travel were up 18.5% year on year to 132.6 billion JPY, but the result was still down 33.0% compared to August 2019.
Sales in inbound travel were down 9.3% year on year to 12.7 billion JPY.
In comparison with August 2019, sales in domestic package tours reduced by 41.1% to 69 billion JPY with 1,596,106 customers (down 47.6%). Sales in overseas package tours were up 39.8% year on year to 16.4 billion JPY with 42,863 customers (up 26.8%), but compared to August 2019, sales and customers were still largely down 67.9% and 79.0% respectively. After the pandemic, a trend to shift from group travel to FIT seemed to be strong.
The top was JTB Group with sales of 114.5 billion JPY (down 25.1% over 2019), followed by HIS with 45.4 billion JPY (down 21.3%), KNT-CT Holdings with 28.7 billion JPY (down 36.7%), NTA with 28.7 billion JPY (down 32.1%) and Hankyu with 25.3 billion JPY (down 15.2%).
