Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) announced that sales of 50 major Japanese travel agents amounted to 412 billion yen in total in January 2015 (+0.1%), which consisted of 138.1 billion yen for the outbound travel business (-3.9%), 6.5 billion yen for the inbound travel business (+45.9%) and 267.4 billion yen for the domestic travel business (+1.6%).
The inbound travel market was primarily boosted by travelers from Southeast Asia, who benefited from ease of the visa rule, and the domestic travel market continuously increased travelers for the Kansai area. One of the major factors for the year-on-year reduction of Japanese outbound travelers was still that weak yen discouraged Japanese consumers to go abroad for leisure, according to hearings to travel agents.
Sales of packaged tour products totaled 109.9 billion yen in total (-3.1%) with 2,633,277 customers (-6.7%), comprising 48.9 billion yen (-6.9%) with 250,424 customers (-9.0%) for outbound travels by Japanese, 385 million yen (+83.8%) with 18,037 customers (+43.1%) for inbound travels by foreigners and 63.7 billion yen (-0.4%) with 2,364,816 customers (-6.7%) for domestic travels.
All of top five Japanese travel agents (JTB, H.I.S., Hankyu Travel, KNT-CT and Nippon Travel Agency) resulted in reduction of sales of the outbound travel business. For the inbound travel business, Nippon Travel Agency (NTA) succeeded in increasing their sales by 66.6%, and Rakuten Travel, the leading Japanese OTA, raised their ranking to the fifth by increasing sales by 31.2% to 312 million yen. For the domestic travel business, all of top five Japanese travel agents reduced their monthly sales for three months in a row, though JTB and Rakuten Travel resulted in monthly growths of 2.5% and 7.5% respectively.
