Japan Tourism Agency reported that the total number of guest nights in November 2023 (provisionally) was up 16.9% year on year to 53.6 million, which were up 7.9% compared to the same month of 2019. Guest nights by Japanese travelers and foreigner travelers were respectively up 3.4% to 42 million and up 28% to 11.6 million compared to the same month of 2019.
The occupancy rate was 61.0% overall, 4.6 lower higher points than November 2019. By type of accommodation, the rates were 41.8% for ryokans, 55.9% for resort hotels, 76.0% for budget hotels and 76.2% for city hotel.
In October 2023 (definitely), the total number of guest nights was up 7.4% to 53.8 million over 2019, out of which foreigners’ guest nights were up 19.5% to 12.3 million. The share of foreigners’ guest nights was 22.8% of the total.
The biggest international source market was South Korea (1.35 million guest nights), followed by Taiwan (1.34 million guest nights), China (1.20 million guest nights), U.S. (1.17 guest nights) and Hong Kong (544,000 guest nights), all of which accounted for 55.8% of the total. The hight growths were seen in Canada (up 79.8%), U.S. (up 69.4%), Singapore (up 55.4%) or Spain (up 50.5%).
