Guest nights in Japan by both Japanese and foreigners finally exceeded the pre-pandemic level in September 2023

Japan Tourism Agency reported that the total number of guest nights in September 2023 (provisionally) was up 10.4% year on year to 50.9 million, which were up 3.1% compared to the same month of 2019. Guest nights by Japanese travelers and foreigner travelers were respectively up 0.6% to 40.7 million and up 15.4% to 9.5 million compared to the same month of 2019.

The occupancy rate was 57.5% overall, 5.9 lower higher points than September 2019. By type of accommodation, the rates were 37.6% for ryokans, 54.7% for resort hotels, 72.4% for budget hotels and 71.2% for city hotel.

In August 2023 (definitely), the total number of guest nights was up 6.4% to 61 million over 2019, out of which foreigners’ guest nights were up 6.4% to 10 million. The share of foreigners’ guest nights was 16.5% of the total. 

By prefecture, Tokyo increased guest nights by 25.5% to 8.9 million, out of which foreigners’ guest nights were up 56.6% to 3.8 million. 

The biggest international source market was China (1.57 million guest nights), followed by Taiwan (1.16 million guest nights), South Korea (1.12 million guest nights), U.S. (720,000 guest nights) and  Hong Kong (630,000 guest nights), all of which accounted for 65% of the total. The hight growths were seen in South Korea (up 98%), U.S. (up 46.1%), Australia (up 38.1%), Philippines (up 67.6%) or Germany (up 42.6%).
