Japan welcomed more than 25 million international visitors in 2023, 80% of the pre-pandemic level

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international visitors in Japan 2023 reached 25,066,100, almost 80% of the result in 2019 (31,882,049). Compared to 2022, more than 20 million increased at once.

The number of international visitors in December 2023 was up 8.2% to 2,734,000 compared to the same month of 2019, recording the most visitors on a single month basis since the pandemic happened. 

The largest source market in December 2023 continued to be South Korea with 782,700 visitors (up 215.7% over 2019), followed by Taiwan with 399,500 visitors (up 14.7%), China with 312,400 (down 56.0%), Hong Kong with 251,100 visitors (up 0.6%) and U.S. with 183,200 visitors (up 26.8%). 

Visitors from 13 of 23 major source markets reached record-high for December, and visitors from Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia and Australia resulted in record-high on a single month basis. 

According to OAG, international flights arriving in six major airports in Japan (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) in December 2023 recovered to a 15.2% decrease (18,821 flights), and available seats to a 14.6% reduction (4.41 million seats) compared toNovember 2019. 

Haneda handled 21.3% more flights (4,393) and 13.1% more available seats (1,066,560) than December 2019.
