The ratio of online booking for overseas travels by Chinese reaches 75%

The latest survey on Chinese traveler trends, conducted by JTB Tourism Research & Consulting, finds that the ratio of twice or more overseas travels a year was about 30%: 44.1% for one a year, 22.2% for twice a year and 7.3% for third time or more a year. Chinese traveling overseas twice or more a year were more in interior cities like Chengdu, Chongqing or Changsha (31%) than coast cities like Shanghai, Beijing or Guangzhou (28%).

The most preferred travel style was packaged group tour (42.5%), followed by free plan-typed packaged tour (30.7%) and FIT (23.6%). The most preferred booking channel was online via PC, smart phone or app (74.5%), followed by travel company retailer (22.5%) and over the phone (2.4%).

The most important element for selection of an overseas destination was dining experience (56.7%), followed by unseen or inexperienced things (55.5%), historic values like World Heritages (50.2%) and easy-to-get visa (34.1%). The survey finds that people in coast cities generally have stronger commitment to what they do in a destination than people in interior cities do.

With regard to inspiration on SNS, the ratios of answers that you went to a destination you liked on SNS were 48% in coast cities and 39% in interior cities, and the ratio of answers that you bought things you liked on SNS were 40.4% in coast cities and 36.8% in interior cities. The ratio of answers that you traveled with SNS friends was about 35% overall.

The survey, conducted in the period from September 9 to 14 2016, targeted 1,000 Chinese who have plans to travel to Japan within the next three years after the screening survey to 1,969 males and females in coast cities (Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Fuzhou, Dalian and Shenyang) and in interior cities (Chengdu, Chongqing, Changsha, Xian, Hefei and Zhengzhou). Annual household income of the targets was 120,000 Yuan or more (about 2.4 million JPY or more).
