Travel spending in Japan per Japanese traveler increased by 15% in Q2 of 2023 compared to 2019

Japan Tourism Agency announced that the total amount of Japanese travel consumption was up 27.7% year on year to 5.6 trillion JPY in the 2nd quarter of 2023 (April to June 2023), which were 6.6% less consumption than the same period of 2019. The total consisted of 4.4 trillion JPY for overnight trips (down 2.9% over 2019) and 1.2 million JPY for day trips (down 18.4% over 2019).

The total number of Japanese travelers in Japan was up 15% year on year to 134 million, which were 18.6% fewer travelers than 2019. Overnight travelers were up 18.4% to 72.8 million (down 12.9% over 2019), and day travelers were up 11.3% to 60.8 million (down 24.4% over 2019).

Travel spending a travel per traveler was up 11% year on year to 41,875JPY, which were 14.6% more than even 2019. It was up 9.5% to 60,692 JPY for overnight trip (up 11.5% over 2019) and up 8.7% to 19,345JPY for day trip (up 8.0% over 2019).
