No.1 tweeted city in Japan by foreign travelers is Shibuya

The latest survey on SNS by foreign travelers in Japan, conducted by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, shows that No.1 city tweeted on Twitter was Shibuya with 1,213 tweets, followed by Yokohama with 408 Tweets and Shinjuku with 381 tweets.

Out of foreign travelers to Shibuya, tweets on ‘crossing’ accounted for 19.7%, and tweets on ‘night’ for 13.5%. The ministry’s report said that the tweet tendency helped grasp purposes to visit or times to visit.

The survey is based on tweet frequencies on Twitter by foreign travelers to Japan in November 2014 in the fields of place, eating or seeing. 52,000 tweets by 26,000 travelers were subject to the survey, and out of the total, 24,000 travelers tweeted with photos.

Prefecture-wise, No.1 was Tokyo with 10,622 tweets, followed by Kyoto with 1,817 tweets and Osaka with 831 tweets.

For eating, ‘sushi’ was the top with 513 tweets, followed by ‘dinner’ with 391 tweets, ‘ramen’ with 346 tweets. In addition, ‘burger,’ ‘sashimi,’ ‘noodle,’ ‘udon’ and ‘curry’ were words tweeted a lot.

For seeing, ‘Fuji’ was overwhelmingly top with 1,688 tweets, followed by ‘street’ with 330 tweets and ‘dome’ with 301 tweets. Also, high tweet frequencies were found in ‘temple,’ ‘tower,’ ‘skytree’ or ‘shrine.’ The report said that tweets on tourist movements, such as ‘Skytree viewing from Asakusa’ or ‘Mt. Fuji viewing from Shinkansen,’ could be seen a lot.

The survey was conducted to English speaker Twitters with GPS functions on in the period from November 1 to 30 2014.
