Year-on-year comparison of visitors to Japan from four Southeast Asian markets in 2017

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO)’s statistics for 2017 reveal that Japan received 987,000 visitors from Thailand (+9.5% year on year), 352,200 from Indonesia (+30%), 404,100 from Singapore (+11.7%), and 439,500 from Malaysia (+11.5%), all of which were record-high. The total number in seven markets including Philippines, Vietnam and India accounted for 10% of the total inbound travel market.

In December 2017 only, visitors were 115,800 from Thailand (+20.1%) for, 86,400 from Singapore (+13.9%), 52,300 from Indonesia (+27.9%) and 64,700 from Malaysia (+2.2%). The monthly results were record-high in Thailand for December and record-high in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia on a single month basis.

According to JNTO, visitors from Thailand were record-high in all of the months in 2017 except July. In Singapore, consecutive promotional campaigns effectively worked amid lower overseas travel demand.  In Malaysia, promotional activities by airlines and PR for Muslim motivated travelers to visit Japan, and JNTO opened its local office in Kuala Lumpur in March 2017. Visitors from Indonesia resulted on double-digit growths in all of the months in 2017 except July, as JNTO promoted Japan as a Muslim-friendly destination.
