Foreigners’ guest nights in Japan were up 23% in February 2024 compared to pre-pandemic

Japan Tourism Agency reported that the total number of guest nights in February 2024 (provisionally) was up 17.0% year on year to 48.2 million, which were also up 10.6% compared to the same month of 2019. Guest nights by Japanese travelers and foreigner travelers were respectively up 7.1% to 36.7 million and up 23.4% to 11.4 million compared to the same month of 2019.

The occupancy rate was 54.4% overall, 7.5 lower higher points than February 2019. By type of accommodation, the rates were 34.7% for ryokans, 54.2% for resort hotels, 72.2% for budget hotels and 70.1% for city hotel.

In January 2024 (definitely), the total number of foreigners’ guest nights reached record-high 11.2 million for January The growth rate in three major urban areas was 42.8% compared to the same month of 2019, while it was a 4.4% decrease in local areas. 

By prefecture, the largest growth was seen in Fukushima with 153.6%, followed by Tokyo with 77.2%, Kanagawa with 69.9% and Miyagi with 57.6%. 

The biggest international source market was South Korea (1.82 million guest nights), followed by Taiwan (1.56 million guest nights), China (1.45 million guest nights), U.S. (681,000 guest nights) and  Hong Kong (621,000 guest nights), all of which accounted for 65.3% of the total. The hight growths were seen in Philippines (up 100.4%).
