Foreigners’ guest nights in Japan were up 32% in December 2023 compared to pre-pandemic

Japan Tourism Agency reported that the total number of guest nights in December 2023 (provisionally) was up 9.4% year on year to 51.5 million, which were also up 9.3% compared to the same month of 2019. Guest nights by Japanese travelers and foreigner travelers were respectively up 3.7% to 39.4million and up 32.3% to 12.1 million compared to the same month of 2019.

The occupancy rate was 57.9% overall, 0.8 lower higher points than December 2019. By type of accommodation, the rates were 35.3% for ryokans, 52.5% for resort hotels, 69.6% for budget hotels and 71.4% for city hotel.

In November 2023 (definitely), the total number of foreigners’ guest nights reached record-high 11.9 million for November. The growth rate in three major urban areas was 42.7% compared to the same month of 2019, which was much higher than 8.1% in local areas. By prefecture, the largest growth was seen in Oita with 130.2%, followed by Fukuoka with 71.9%, Tokyo with 69.6% and Ishikawa with 50.3%. The share of foreigners’ guest nights was 22.5% of the total. 

The biggest international source market was South Korea (1.33 million guest nights), followed by Taiwan (1.27 million guest nights), China (1.13 million guest nights), U.S. (1.07 million guest nights) and  Hong Kong (617,000 guest nights), all of which accounted for 56.2% of the total. The hight growths were seen in South Korea (up 308.9%), U.S. (up 60.5%), Australia (up 61.3%), Singapore (up 75.8%) or Italy (up 51.8%).
