Foreigners’ guest nights in Japan were up 33% in March 2024 compared to pre-pandemic

Japan Tourism Agency reported that the total number of guest nights in March 2024 (provisionally) was up 8.2% year on year to 54.9 million, which were also up 7.2% compared to the same month of 2019. Guest nights of Japanese travelers and foreigner travelers were respectively up1.3% to 42.2 million and up 33.4% to12.7 million compared to the same month of 2019.

The occupancy rate was 59.7% overall, 3.7 lower higher points than March 2019. By type of accommodation, the rates were 36.1% for ryokans, 54.3% for resort hotels, 74.3% for budget hotels and 74.3% for city hotel.

In February 2024 (definitely), the total number of foreigners’ guest nights was up 94.2% year on year to 11.5 million. The growth rate in three major urban areas was 45.2% compared to the same month of 2019, while it was a 1.6% decrease in local areas. 

By prefecture, the largest growth in comparison with March 2019 was seen in Tokyo with 100.6% up, and large growths were seen in Tohoku prefectures, such  as Miyagi with 79.1% up, Fukushima with 69% up, Yamagata with 18.2% up or Iwate with 16.0% up.

The biggest international source market was China with1.83 million guest nights, followed by Taiwan with 1.72 million guest nights, South Korea with 1.67 million guest nights), U.S. with 677,000 guest nights and  Hong Kong  with 635,000 guest nights, all of which accounted for 67.4% of the total. The hight growths were seen in Philippines with 128.2% up.
