Japanese guest nights were up 5.8% in October 2022 even compared to pre-pandemic, boosted by the travel discount program

Japan Tourism Agency reported that the total number of Japanese guest nights in October 2022 (provisionally) was up 32.5% year on year to 42.1 million, which were up 5.8% even compared to October 2019. The growth clearly resulted from start of the nationwide travel discount program on October 11. 

International guest nights were up 594.3% over 2021 or down 78.9% over 2019 to 2,160,000, increasing from 687,000 in September 2022 due to open of the Japanese border on October 11. 

The total was up 38% over 2021 or down 11.6% over 2019 to 44.3 million guest nights.

The occupancy rate was 52.6% overall, higher than 49.5% in September 2022, but still 11 lower points than 2019. By type of accommodation, the rates were 39.2% for ryokans, 52.6% for resort hotels, 61.9% for budget hotels and 59.6% for city hotel.

In September 2022 (definitely), the total number of guest nights was up 73.1% over 2021 or down 19.2% over 2019 to 39.4 million.  Top three prefectures were Tokyo with 4.7 million guest nights (down 29.1% over 2019), Hokkaido with 3.2 million guest nights (down 1.8% over 2019) and Osaka with 2.5 million guest nights (down 33% over 2019).

In September 2022 (definitely), the top international source market was U.S., followed by South Korea, China, Thailand and Germany, all of which accounted for 41.9% of the total.
