‘Engaged travelers’ are estimated at 18.3 million in Japan with 20% of all residents traveling to a particular local community

The recent Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism survey on ‘engaged travelers (relationship traveler in other words)’  in Japan finds that the number of relationship travelers is estimated at 18.27 million, about 20% of all 106 million 18 years old or older residents nationwide. 

A relationship traveler is defined as a traveler who visits a particular local community for a particular purpose, which has recently received a lot of attention as a new travel style in the travel industry of Japan.

The total of relationship travelers consisted of 8.61 million (18.4% of all residents) in three major urban areas and 9.66 million (16.3% of all residents) in other local areas. Out of them, 4.48 million relationship travelers from three major urban areas to other local areas and 2.97 million from other local areas to three major urban areas were estimated. 

The survey results illustrated that more relationship travelers cities or villages have, more migration they have. 

With regard to relationship activities in a particular local community, 3.01 million travelers (6.4%) in three major urban areas and 3.27 million (5.5%) in other local areas directly contributed to creation of new businesses, volunteer activities or city planning, and also relationship activities in local communities were diversified.

Relationship travelers as workers, such as remote-working, were 880,000 in three major urban areas (1.9%) and 940,000 in other local areas (1.6%).
