Japan Tourism Agency announced that spending in Japan by international travelers for three months from October to December 2022 was estimated at 595.2 billion JPY (the preliminary report), which were 50.9% less than the same period of 2019. The top market was South Korea with 104.5 billion JPY (18.1% of the total), followed by Hong Kong with 74.5 billion JPY (12.5%), U.S. with 68.9 billion JPY (11.6%) and Taiwan with 61.2 billion JPY (10.3%). The top market in the same period of 2022 was China with 389.3 billion JPY.
Spending per international traveler was up 24.6% to 212,000 JPY even compared to three years ago, and the most-spent item was accommodation with 72,000 JPY a traveler, followed by shopping with 62,000 JPY and food and drink with 46,000 JPY.
Spending per leisure-purpose traveler was also up 20% to 200,000 JPY, and The most-spent item was accommodation with 63,000 JPY a traveler, followed by shopping with 62,000 JPY and food and drink with 46,000 JPY.
