43 major travel companies in Japan finally earned more sales in March 2023 than pre-pandemic

Japan Tourism Agency announced that sales of 43 major travel companies increased by 17.8% to 531 billion JPY in total in March 2023, compared to March 2019. While sales in domestic travel were up 75.7% to 441 billion JPY, particularly boosted by the national travel campaign,  sales in overseas travel were stir down 60% to 70.7 billion JPY.  Sales in inbound travel were down 16.5% to 19.2 billion JPY.

Despite the strong recovery overall, sales in package tours were still low. Sales in domestic package tours reduced by 6.7% to 87.2 billion JPY with 2,753,073 customers (down 20.2%). Sales in overseas package tours were down 88.1% to 4.5 billion JPY with 13,406 customers(down 93.2%).

Compared to March 2019, JTB Group companies increased sales by 86.6% to 287.6 billion JPY in total. HIS continued reducing sales by 45.3% to 25.9 billion JPY because it largely relies on the overseas travel business. KNT-CT Holdings increased sales by 41.2% to 60.5 billion JPY, and NTA decreased sales by 26.6% to 30.1 billion JPY.
